Crypto hack losses in September 2026, including the monthly total, largest incidents and stolen-fund flows.
Bitget and Liquid Network dominated September losses
Most of the month's losses came from two incidents: Bitget and Liquid Network.
Bitget
Bitget was the largest incident of the month. The exchange said its $464 million protection fund was sufficient to cover all affected users.
This means the amount stolen and the amount ultimately lost by customers may differ: compensation can come from the exchange's own reserves even if the stolen crypto is not recovered.
Liquid Network
Liquid Network was the second major incident. About $285 million was later returned, reducing the unrecovered amount substantially.
If that amount is deducted from PeckShield's September total:
$766.49M − $285M = $481.49M
That is still about 3.5 times August's $136.3 million.
Why September was so high
The monthly spike was driven mainly by a small number of very large attacks rather than a broad increase across all incidents. This concentration matters because a single major infrastructure breach can dominate monthly crypto-loss statistics.
Gross losses vs. final losses
PeckShield's $766.49 million figure reflects the value affected during the hacks.
It should not be treated as the final permanent loss because:
- some stolen funds may be returned or recovered;
- exchanges may reimburse users from protection funds;
- funds can later be frozen or traced on-chain.
In September, Liquid Network recovered about $285 million, while Bitget said its protection fund covered affected users.
Bottom line
September 2026 was the worst month of the year for crypto hacks, with $766.49 million lost across 55 major incidents, up 462% from August.
The increase was driven mainly by Bitget and Liquid Network, while subsequent recoveries and compensation reduced the eventual impact on users.
